All Greene County 4-H and FFA’ers who are planning on show sheep, goat and lamb at this year’s county fair must attend the weigh-ins that are scheduled for this Saturday in Jefferson.
Greene County ISU 4-H and Youth Coordinator Sarah Jo Reynolds says the weigh-ins will be from 7:30-10:30am at the fairgrounds. She adds that all market lambs and goats must be weighed in and tagged for the county fair and each youth is allowed up to ten market lambs.
The Greene County Lamb Producers are once again covering the cost of each sheep ear tag this year. Goat exhibitors must pay $1.50 per ear tag.
Reynolds notes that those exhibitors wanting to display their animal at Ak-Sar-Ben or the Iowa State Fair will have to pay extra and must contact the Extension office in Jefferson before Saturday.
She talks about the increase in numbers for both sheep and goats in the county.
“Our sheep program actually grew last year, so we saw an increase in our sheep numbers. So we hope to see that again, it’s always nice to see numbers go up. In the meat goat and diary goat department always seems to stay pretty steady and we hope to always increase in that area too. But yeah, we’ve got a good amount of families in those programs.”
Once the weigh-ins are complete, Reynolds urges all participants to verify the information by May 15th to be eligible to show at county fair by going to your 4-H online account.
