Last week’s Hershey track meet in Jefferson had 58 youth competing against each other for the right to advance to the Iowa Parks and Recreation Association’s state track meet in Marshalltown in June.
Girls and boys ages 9-14 years-old were eligible to qualify in the 50, 100, 200 and 400 and 800-meter track events and there was the standing long jump and the softball throw for field events. Jefferson Parks and Recreation Director Vicky Lautner says each participant could be entered in two running and one field event or two field and one running event. 5-8 year-olds competed but were not eligible for the state track meet.
There were four age groups with a girls and boys division: 5-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 brackets. Lautner points out that the reason why they have this track meet is to get kids familiar with how track meets are conducted and what the rules are for each event.
