Kathleen (Hanigan) Janssen of Johnston, IA, and formerly of Churdan, IA, passed away on December 31, 2022, at her home in Johnston with her daughter by her side at the age of 97 years, just nine days short of reaching her 98th birthday.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, January 7, 2022 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church near Churdan with Fr. John Gerald as Celebrant. Music for the Mass will be by the St. Patrick’s Choir with Lois Last as organist. Rachel Greene will be harpist. Lector for the Mass will be Kathleen Brosnahan. Casket bearers will be John Hanigan, Dan Brosnahan, Joe Klein, Jerry Hanigan Jr., Jerome Monahan, Brian Monahan. Honorary casket bearers will be Jeanne Hanigan, Kathleen Brosnahan, Karen Staley, Mary Jo Hanigan-Schatz, Denise Cole, Mary Claire Houston, and Mary Ellen Gorman. Burial will be in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on Friday, January 6, 2022 from 5 – 7 P.M. where there will be a Christian Wake Service held at 6:30 P.M. followed by a Rosary. Additional visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 A.M. – 10:15 A.M. on Saturday prior to the Mass.

Kathleen Rose (Hanigan) Janssen was born January 9, 1925, to Thomas and Catherine Hanigan in Crawford County, near Dunlap, Iowa.
Kathleen spent her young years attending school in Boyer Township, Crawford County and attended High School at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Dunlap, Iowa.
Kathleen obtained Cosmetology licenses from Nebraska and Iowa going to school in Omaha and Sioux City. She operated a beauty salon in Dunlap from 1944 until 1951, when she married and moved to the farm near Churdan, Iowa.
On April 9, 1951, Kathleen was married to Harold E. Janssen of Churdan at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dunlap, Iowa. To this union was born a daughter, Coleen Marie Janssen. Kathleen managed the family farm, loved shopping, playing bridge and dancing the jitterbug and enjoying frying chicken for Sunday dinner.
Kathleen was a member of St. Patrick’s and St. Columbkille’s Catholic Churches of Churdan, Iowa and after she moved to Johnston, Iowa she became a member of St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church.
Kathleen was preceded in death by her husband Harold, who passed away January 5, 1977; her parents Thomas and Catherine Hanigan of Dunlap, Iowa; in-laws Harry and Catherine Janssen of Churdan, Iowa; brothers John Hanigan and his wife Betty and Gerald Hanigan and his wife Patsy; sisters Marie Houston and her husband Edward of Dunlap, Iowa and Marjorie Brosnahan and her husband Joe of Logan, Iowa and brother-in-law Gerald Klein of Dunlap, Iowa.
She is survived by her daughter Coleen Janssen of Johnston; a sister Virginia Klein of Dunlap; and many other nieces, nephews and friends.
