Start of Color RunIt was windy, but a sunny day for the 2014 Greene County Relay for Life on Saturday.

Several hundreds of people participated in various activities such as the new Color Out Cancer 5K run/walk, the community barbecue meal, luminaria ceremony and the silent auction.

Silent Auction Chair Sharon Fisher talks about the silent auction and how it offers a different aspect for people to get involved with Relay for Life aside from the Color Out Cancer 5K race.

“But there are some people that can’t participate in that and they need something to do while those runners are out.  So it gives them a little activity to do in the rec center to look around at those items and kind of shop I guess while you’re here so it’s been a great fundraiser, we usually raise between $4,000-$5,000 each year just off the silent auction.”

The Color Out Cancer 5K race brought in 250 participants which the survivors walk lead up to the start of the race.

The luminaria ceremony closed down the event and Shirley Stapleton, chair of the luminarias talks about the time change and having the ceremony, normally a nighttime event going into the afternoon hours.

“It’s a challenge, but I think it’s a challenge that I think is starting all over the country because people are having to change the times of the luminaria service.  But I think the music and the reading of the names is probably more important than the lights themselves.”

All proceeds from Saturday’s event went to cancer research with the American Cancer Society.
