It’s break time from competition for the Greene County basketball and wrestling teams, but practices are underway to prepare for the start of the 2023 portion of the seasons. Greene County head wrestling coach Zach Beekman told Raccoon Valley Radio that conditioning is the number one focus for these practices and on into January. “We’ve got to be ready with the kind of tournaments we’ve got coming up our guys have to be ready to wrestle full six minute matches and even matches that go into overtime that really push you mentally and physically. And, you’ve got to be able to do that multiple times in a day, and we’re not quite there yet.”
The coach added, “We’re using the time over break, plus the month of January to really push our conditioning so that we’re ready for the District Tournament (Feb. 11), and immediately after that you’re going right into State that following Wednesday (Feb. 15).”
The Rams have cancelled a triangular meet that was to have been Jan. 3 in Jefferson because one of the teams backed out. Activities Director Dave Wright notified Raccoon Valley Radio the first action of 2023 is now set for Thursday, Jan. 5 at St. Edmond High School in Ft. Dodge vs. the Gaels and Iowa Falls-Alden at 6 p.m., which was recently added to the schedule. The first scheduled tournament for the Rams is at the Atlantic Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 7.
