Winter is a prime time for motorists to become stranded, especially with slick roads, and below freezing temperatures.
Many emergency experts and county officials advise drivers to have an emergency kit on hand should they become stranded. Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Kempf tells Raccoon Valley Radio that non-perishable and high-energy foods are good to have, along with water for drinking. He adds that anything that can be used for insulation or to keep individuals warm are also important, like newspapers, extra clothes or blankets.
Guthrie County Sheriff Marty Arganbright advises that battery cables, a shovel, a first aid kit and any medications that may be needed should also be included in an emergency kit. He says that the battery cables are important in case the vehicle needs to be jumped, and that having a shovel can help individuals dig the vehicles out. Arganbright suggests the first aid kit, because there are different things that can go wrong, and it may be needed in case of an injury.
