Greene County Adopt-A-Family continued a holiday tradition to bring less fortunate individuals and families more cheer.

Organizer Sherry Graven says the annual Christmas Food Baskets were distributed this past Saturday to about 155 families at Clover Hall on the Greene County Fairgrounds. She talked about the kinds of foods that are included to help get people through the holiday season.

“Normally, they get two huge boxes full of food, and a couple bags with meat. I try to get them fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, because I know that’s what the kids like and it’s easy for them to prepare, definitely bread with peanut butter and jelly. Things that even the elderly people can fix and it’s not hard for them. A lot of these kids are home alone (over winter break) and so they need to be able to find food that they can actually prepare for themselves.”   

Graven told Raccoon Valley Radio what inspired her to continue to help lead this kind of effort for those that might be struggling this time of year.

“I help because in my heart I want to make sure the kids are taken care of. And when I grew up my parents helped, my sister helps, we’re a family of helpers and that’s just the way we are. And so, I guess that’s why I do it.”

Graven wanted to say thanks to the volunteers and everyone who contributed to their successful Christmas Food Baskets.
