The Panora Police Department will be looking at speed signs to use within city limits after the city council recently approved an application for the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau Grant.

Police Chief Matt Reising says these speed signs can either be wired into the electrical grid, or be solar powered. The speed limit will be posted on the sign, but it will also be able to tell how fast a vehicle is traveling. There are some other options that come with the signs, but Reising tells Raccoon Valley Radio what he’d like to put up.

“The one that I was looking at, you can customize whatever is displayed on that. I think the speed would probably be best. And then of course, there’s all (the) bells and whistles you can put on it, flashing lights, all different kinds of things. But yeah, it would just display the speed sign and what your speed is, and then flash is how I’d like to program it when it’s over that speed. With that, the grant does require a data collector on there, which isn’t (a) very significant cost, so we would know what the average speed is in that zone.”

Reising mentions that there are two places he’d like to place the speed sign. One spot is on West Market Street heading towards Panorama High School, and the other is on Main Street east of the city. He adds that both places have posted speed limits, but that many people are rarely following them.
