Deer season has started in Iowa.
While the early and youth seasons have already happened, shotgun season is just beginning. The first shotgun season will end this weekend, with the second season to start later in the month. Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer for Guthrie County Jeremy King reminds hunters of an important part of hunting.
“It’s required by law that you have at minimum, and this is the least amount, of solid, and that word right there is so key in this, is a solid blaze orange vest. If you have one that has, like, the tree branches that go through it and it’s not solid, or the back is brown, if you’re using a pheasant vest that has a carrying pouch that’s like a canvas carrying pouch and back, it has to be solid blaze orange front and back. And that’s something that we’re very strict on because it does save lives. So that’s your minimum amount of requirement for blaze orange.”
King also suggests wearing a blaze orange hat. He says he knows that many hunters are worried that that would alert deer to their presence, but adds that deer see in grayscale, so they can’t see the orange. He mentions that other hunters can though, and it could help to keep an accident from happening.
