With some snow due to come into Greene County this week, the county secondary roads department is ready to keep the roads cleared.

Greene County Engineer Wade Weiss tells Raccoon Valley Radio during a typical snow event, their fleet of 12 plow trucks goes out first at 5am to treat and clear the over 200 miles of paved county roads. He points out the 12 maintainers will help clear the over 750 miles of gravel roads, once there is about six inches of snow on the ground. Weiss talks about what his crews typically do once they are on the road.

“Depending on what’s happening we’ll either be putting sand and salt down on the critical areas: railroads, bridges, curves, stop signs. Once the storm starts to subside and there’s not blowing snow, we’ll centerline the pavements.”

Weiss adds they have about 3,000-4,000 tons of sand and salt mixed every winter season, along with having an additional 1,000 tons of salt ready to be mixed should the county need it.
