When the Iowa High School Athletic Association released pairings for the football playoffs round of 16 games coming up on Oct. 28, there may have been some surprise that West Lyon (Inwood) will be making the 195 mile trip to Jefferson to face Greene County. Then came the realization that one of Iowa’s true coaching legends will have one of his teams at Linduska Field for the first time.

Jay Roozeboom has been the the Wildcats head coach for 30 seasons. He has coached players who went on to NFL careers, has compiled  297 victories against just 59 losses, and his teams have five state championships and not a single losing season in all those years. His 2021 team was the 2A runner-up to Southeast Valley (Gowrie).

This WL team is 7-2 and the Wildcats were second in District 1 to undefeated Central Lyon/George-Little Rock. Greene County is 8-1 under fourth year head coach Caden Duncan. It’s a top 10 match up in the round of 16 as the two squads are both ranked sixth or seventh in 2A, depending on the poll.

Kickoff from Linduska Field on Friday is set for 7 p.m. with coverage on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com starting at 6:15 p.m.
