Dallas County and surrounding residents are invited to a special program and volunteer opportunity with the County Conservation Board.

Dallas County Conservation Board Outreach Coordinator Sarah Gilchrist tells Raccoon Valley Radio that they are celebrating national Indigenous Peoples’ Day this Sunday as volunteers will help clean up the burial mounds at Kuehn Conservation Area. She says they will create a gathering site for celebrations and programming by mulching on the trail, assembling log benches and removing trees. Additionally, there will be a program about the history of the mounds. Gilchrist is excited to have this kind of program.

“I mean it just dovetails so nicely with that holiday and the fact that we have burial mounds. It is in an area of the park that maybe is a little less traffic and so it might not even be on people’s radars that even exists. We get so many people who want to give back and participate and do a project that really, they feel, makes a difference.”

The event is from 1:30-3:30pm on Sunday and volunteers should wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Registration is required for the free event to make sure there are enough tools and other materials to clean up the area. Click the link below to sign up.
