A federally-funded utility program is starting its first round of applications.

The Low Income Heating Assistance Program (LIHEAP) applications are now open for those 60 and older or disabled. New Opportunities Greene County Coordinator Teresa Lansman tells Raccoon Valley Radio LIHEAP is a program where a household is given a lump sum of money to help offset the high heating costs during the winter months. She points out when a household is on LIHEAP, they can’t have their heating disconnect through April 1st. 

Lansman notes this year everyone is required to apply for LIHEAP in person.

“In previous years, we have had this group of people, the elderly and disabled, that they sign up once every three years in person. That way they don’t have to get out as much or whatever, we give that benefit, but this year everyone has to come in.” 

Additionally, Lansman says she will be at the Scranton, Grand Junction and Churdan libraries on Wednesday afternoon on a rotation schedule and those will be by appointment. Lansman adds to sign up for LIHEAP you have to be at 200-percent of the federal poverty level, have proof of income, Social Security cards for everyone in the household, and an electric and gas billing statement.
