During this week’s National Library Week and for the rest of the month, all area children are invited to the Jefferson Library’s children’s department.

Children Librarian Terry Clark says for the rest of April, youth can compete in an I-Spy contest where each week you can find a series of items in the children’s department and when you turn in your sheet, you will be entered into a drawing for prizes.  By the end of the contest, Clark adds that there will be 110 items in celebration of the library’s 110th anniversary.

Other activities for April also reflect the year 1904 when the library was first established.  Clark states that kids can make paper dolls or jigsaw puzzles like they did in 1904 or make rubber band jewelry like they do in the present.  They will also have games from 1904 like chess, checkers, hopscotch and wooden yo-yo’s.

She talks about another fun activity for children to enjoy this month in support of the library’s 110th birthday year.

“We have candles hidden in the library so when they bring those up to the desk, we have old-fashion candy that they will get as a treat.  So if you remember Mary Janes or sour balls or saltwater taffy, these are some of the candies that they will receive.”

The children’s department will also have Dr. Seuss and American Girl displays for everyone to enjoy during National Library Week this week.
