The youth and diasbled hunting seasons have started recently and the Department of Natural Resources encourages those to take advantage. 

DNR Conservation Officer Jeremy King says this season is only for youth that are 16 years or younger and accompanied by an adult or those that are considered disabled. He says this time period is a gold mine and a great opportunity for youth and disabled hunters to learn more about hunting. 

“I’ve always joked with people that Guthrie County we’re blessed with absolutely terrific outdoor recreational opportunities with deer, and turkey, and ducks, and geese, and pheasants, and everything that we can dream of. We are in a beautiful place for all of that. It is really in my opinion, the hardest thing to do is if somebody is after a trophy buck or a buck in general. The hardest thing is to find one during the youth season. And they’re still in a summer pattern where if you find one, there’s a really good chance if you use those wood friendship skills and get in there quiet and play the wind that you’re going to have a chance of harvesting one of those.”

King states that any youth that purchases a tag before they turn 16 they can still use that tag after their 16th birthday. Youth can use a bow, shotgun, rifle or muzzleloader until the season ends on October 2nd. For more information about the youth or disabled season visit the dnr website linked here.
