A new state law will alter  how students change school districts during the school year.

The  open enrollment deadlines of September 1st and March 1st, are now eliminated which was set into law in this year’s legislative session, which became law on July 1st. Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center Schools Superintendent Josh Rasmussen explains how this new law could affect the school district along with students.

“So you think about a student maybe that’s jumping from school district to school district in different programs, different curriculum, those types of things. It could create gaps. So I think as school districts, we just have to make sure that we have systems in place and maybe interventions for those kids. Find out maybe what they’re missing if they’re coming from a different school.”

The district’s certified enrollment count happens every October 1st where each public school district receives state funding for the next fiscal year, based on how many students are in seats, Rasmussen expects this not be a big deal financially with the change.

“That funding will follow those students and we just have to track how many days there are in our district.”

He points out this new law will add more work for their front office staff. However, the 90-day student ineligibility for extracurricular activities remains the same.
