The 43rd Annual Adel Sweet Corn Festival will kick off tomorrow with a couple of activities.

The shucking of seven tons of sweet corn begins at 4:30 p.m. Friday in preparation to have it given out the next day. Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce Director Deb Bengston says another fun event will be the Sweet Corn Princess Contest at 6:30 p.m.

“It’s a drawing winner, we have 23 entries this year from second through fourth grade. So, it’ll be a fun evening to come out and see the Sweet Corn Princess.”

Bengtson says this year is even more special as it is also the 175th birthday of the City of Adel.

“I think it’s really a fun time. We don’t get to celebrate birthdays often here and it’s hard to believe that the City of Adel is 175 years old when last year the State of Iowa was just 175 years old so that’s sort of gives you a concept that the City of Adel was one of the first cities established when Iowa became a state.”

Bengtson encourages people to come out and enjoy the festival on both Friday and Saturday. Also, Raccoon Valley Radio’s Big Red Radio will be providing music and announcements from 4-8 p.m. Friday just off the square in Adel during the Adel Sweet Corn Festival.
