With warmer days still ahead of us and the continued potential for severe weather, there are important safety precautions for those with medical conditions if they lose power.
Dallas County Health Department Community Health Administrator Abigail Chihak says they encourage people to talk with their healthcare providers regarding a power outage and refrigerated medicine or medical devices powered by electricity.
“They can be a great source of guidance for alternative medical equipment to have on hand for emergencies or guidance on how long medications can stay good outside of their optimal temperatures. We also encourage folks to make a plan and know when to evacuate, when to shelter in place.”
Chihak tells Raccoon Valley Radio it’s important to look over your plan and make needed changes such as getting a battery backup for equipment, someone you could stay with if they have power and having an emergency kit with items they may need.
“If you do have a generator that’s needed for any life sustaining equipment make sure that you are familiar with the safety guidance because we want to prevent any carbon monoxide issues there.”
Chihak says for additional guidance you can go here or contact the Dallas County Health Department at 515-993-3750.
