Dallas Center – Grimes Mustangs softball had already defeated conference rival Indianola Indians three times this year coming into their first round matchup on Monday, and were able to make it four as they were able to churn out fourteen hits on the night, and come away in a quality 9-3 victory. The three seed Mustangs move to 34-6, while the six seed Indianola drops down to 27-13.
Mustang softball was able to get out to a quick start, putting up four runs in the first inning and two in the third to have a 6-0 lead after three. Indianola countered with two in the fourth inning, but DCG put up three in the fifth inning as they were able to get great at bats all day.
The DCG offense continued their torrid streak of hitting, with five different players recording two hits or more. Aubrey Johansen and Allison Lyddon had three hits, while Reese Burke, Izabella Mulder, and Macee Reiling all had two. Five extra base hits were recorded with four doubles along with a home run from Mulder to help create distance for DCG. The team didn’t strike out once the entire game.
Pitching was very good with Johansen picking up the win with six sharp innings, giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out two. Camila Rodriguez pitched an inning of relief to finish out the game.
DCG will be playing in the state semifinals on Wednesday afternoon when they take on seven seed North Scott at Iowa Central Field. First pitch is projected for 1:30, with coverage to be on 943, 997, and AM 1310 KDLS.
