Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Tigers girls softball was tied 4-4 going into the bottom of the seventh on Tuesday night in Adel with a trip to state on the line and were looking for experience to pay off. The two seniors in the Tigers lineup were able to do just that, as a well placed bunt off the bat of Brynn Busta forces an error from Carroll, scoring Olivia Tollari to give the Tigers a thrilling 5-4 victory to advance to the state tournament for a second straight year. ADM moves to 32-4, while Carroll ends their year at 16-17.
Carroll got on the scoreboard first with a leadoff home run to make it 1-0 in the first, before a bunt from Cameron Smith tied it in the bottom of the frame and catcher Addison Banse is able to get a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1. Carroll put up two runs in the second inning, keeping the lead through the bottom of the third until Banse hit a frozen rope to left for a home run. It was her sixth of the year, giving ADM the 4-3 lead.
They kept that lead until the 7th, when Carroll was able to hit an RBI single to tie the game, but ADM was able to counter as the end to get the major victory and deny the Carroll upset attempt. It was the third win of the year for ADM over Carroll and the 18th in the last 20 meetings between the two teams, in a game that will be memorable for a long time.
For the second consecutive year, a hit by Busta delivers the Tigers to the state tournament after hitting a walk off single last year against Bondurant-Farrar.
ADM ace Aliya Yanga didn’t start the game due to battling an injury, so sophomore Cameran Smith got the start and gave up three runs in six innings of work, becoming more dominant as the game went on. Yanga came in off the bench in the seventh and gave up one run.
For the Tigers, they will be the two seed in the 4A state tournament next week and will be taking on seven seed North Scott in the first round. That game will be next Monday at 4:30 pm at Kruger Seeds Field in Fort Dodge. All coverage in Fort Dodge will be broadcast on True Country K1079, the KKRF app, and raccoonvalleyradio.com.
The Tigers softball program will be looking to get their first state championship in ADM history.
