(L-R): Maggie Mikkelsen and Brooke Williams
Two Greene County High School students are preparing for a trip of a lifetime where they will compete against other high school students from across the country.
Freshmen Brooke Williams and Maggie Mikkelsen will be in San Diego, California this week as part of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Contest. They earned the most points for their Nutrition and Wellness presentation at the state level to qualify for nationals. Their project included a survey of nine high school teachers and their health. Williams describes what they did next.
“We had to research and talk about research and talk about physical activity, stress management, eating habits and sleeping habits. So like we had to find, for example for when it came to sleep-themed habits, we had to find the conditions that would make for a good sleeping habitat.”
Mikkelsen talks about her initial reaction when they found out they qualified for nationals.
“Well I tried to hold in my excitement because there were a lot of kids that started screaming after they went to nationals. So I was just like, ‘Oh, I don’t want to embarrass myself.’ So I waited until after we were done and then I just got really excited.”
The National FCCLA Leadership Conference is from June 29th-July 3rd.
