The Friends of Springbrook State Park and Iowa Department of Natural Resources are providing family fun with water safety instruction this weekend.

DNR Educator Anne Riodan says people can learn the basics of kayaking that includes staying in the kayak, paddling and water safety. She says it is very important to know safety protocols when using a kayak.

“If for some reason somebody falls in, they will have a life jacket on but sometimes that is a little bit alarming so if they have just been instructed on exactly what to do and what will happen that can put them more at ease if that happens.”

The session will be free from 3 to 5pm on Sunday at the Springbrook State Park beach. There will be kayaks and life jackets for free use during the instruction.
