Gallup Road with asphalt overlay

With summer officially here, the Jefferson Public Works Department has been hard at work with various street projects.

Public Works Director Dave Morlan says crews have already been doing some concrete patch work such as Westwood replacing water valves and at Rushridge replacing curb and gutter. He explains how they determine the areas of town that need concrete replacements.

“Normally we’ll just go out and survey the town, and take a look, and identify the bad spots, and places there’s sunken spots in the street, or curb and gutter that’s sunken, or missing curb and gutter. (We) Prioritize it and we’ll try and group it together so when we do something, it’s all in one area instead of jumping back and forth. And if anybody sees anything out there that’s in need of repair, please let us know.”

Morlan says they are also doing seal coating in the northwest section of town as part of their maintenance for alleyways, which is done every 3-4 years. He points out a major street project was doing an asphalt overlay on a portion of Gallup Road. Morlan adds crews will also crack and seal all of the blacktop roads this year as a way to prevent further damage and not have to completely replace the entire street.
