The outdoor track and field season opens today in Jefferson with the Greene County Early Bird Meet. Action at Linduska Field in Jefferson begins at 4:30 p.m. Kelly Simpson is the girls’ head coach and Dean Lansman heads the boys’ program. Both coaches are looking forward to seeing what their athletes can do outdoors. The Rams did well at their only meet of the indoor season on March 21 in Storm Lake.
No team score will be kept today, but medals will be awarded. The Greene County teams will host girls’ teams from ADM, Perry, Boone, Carroll, Kuemper Catholic (Carroll), and East Sac County (Lake View), and boys teams from Prairie Valley (Gowrie), Guthrie Center, Boone, Carroll, Kuemper Catholic, East Sac, and Perry.
State meet place winners from 2013 return for several teams and meet officials are looking for some high level competition to begin the outdoor season.
Precipitation chances this afternoon and evening are low although it could be breezy. A mixture of clouds and sun is expected with high temperatures topping 60 degrees.
