Today is known as Flag Day and the public is invited to a special event tonight at the Jefferson Elks Lodge.

Exalted Ruler Bill Berger says a free ceremony will take place at 7pm. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio, the Jefferson DOES Drove #196, Jefferson Veterans of Foriegn Wars Post #9599 and the Jefferson American Legion Post #11 are involved, along with the sixth grade local winners of the Elks’ “What the Flag Means to Me” essay contest to recite their literary works.

Berger points out they will go over the history of the US flag, from its inception in 1776 to the present and how the flag has progressed over the years. He notes the Elks started the Flag Day holiday in 1907 and in 1911, all Elks Lodges were required to perform at least one ceremony on that holiday.

The event is free and open to the public.
