If you enjoy eating morel mushrooms, all across Iowa the fungi have been plentiful.

Greene County Conservation Director Tanner Scheuermann tells Raccoon Valley Radio how Greene County has fared when it comes to hunting for morel mushrooms.

“There are plenty of morel hunters out right now, myself included. It’s been a great year for morels, hearing a lot of really good reports. They’re finding them all around our office out at Spring Lake (Park). They’re everywhere this year.”

Scheuerman explains why he believes this has been an exceptional year for morel mushrooms.

“I think moisture. Moisture and heat, that’s what you hear a lot of. This year with things kind of starting off, kicking off a little later than what we’re used to, which everybody is aware of, I think that’s kind of held them off until we’ve gotten this warmer weather and they’ve really popped and haven’t really quit.”

Scheuermann believes there could be as much as another three weeks of prime morel mushroom season left this year.
