Greene County played a rare varsity girl/boy soccer doubleheader in Wall Lake on Friday vs. East Sac County. The Raiders won the girls’ game 3-0 and the Rams took the boys’ contest by a 4-1 final.
Coach Maribel Hernandez Rams finished the girls’ regular season at 1-9 while ESC is 4-8. Maddie Kinsey had six saves and the Rams had three shots on goal, two from Chanlyn Cunningham and one by Esther Van Horn. Next up is the start of Class 1A Region 3 soccer on Monday, May 16 vs. West Central Valley/Nodaway Valley at WCV High School just east of Stuart at 6 p.m. The winner faces second rated Des Moines Christian at DMC on May 18.
Coach Carl Behne’s boys are 8-4 with one regular season contest remaining on Monday night in Panora vs. Panorama. The Raiders dropped to 2-7 as they suffered a sixth straight loss. Greene County improved to 3-0 all-time vs. ESC and Friday’s meeting was the first the Raiders scored a goal against the Rams. It was a 1-1 match at the half before Greene County put the contest away with three second half goals. The win also clinches a winning season for Greene County, their fourth in as many seasons of having the sport. It started in 2018 and continued in 2019, 2021, and this year. There was no 2020 season due to Covid-19.
The Rams have rarely had a full lineup this season due to injuries and other factors and that was the case again on Friday. Coach Behne told Raccoon Valley Radio the team had a very slow start. After ESC scored on a penalty kick the Rams scored four minutes later on a Gesser Aguilar goal with 12 minutes to play in half number one. About 10 minutes into half number two Brenner Gallagher scored on a PK after Aguilar was fouled while inside the box. “A great assist led to another goal by Gesser and a 3-1 lead, and with about eight minutes left Gesser scored again to complete the hat trick.” It was Aguilar’s third three goal contest of the season and his second in a row.
