It wasn’t an ideal day to play golf, but Coach Heath Telleen’s Greene County boys shot 338 and finished in a tie for first place with Nevada on Tuesday at the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference golf tournament east of State Center at Lincoln Valley Golf Course. The Cubs were declared HOIAC Champions based on a lower score by the fifth golfer, which was 94 for Nevada and 98 for the Rams.

Greene County swept the top two spots with senior Joe Carey medalist at 76 and sophomore Jack Hansen runner-up at 77 for the 18 holes. Sophomore Nathan Behne shot 91 and senior Caden Telleen was at 94 to round out the four scores counting in the team total.

South Hamilton (Jewell) was third at 345 with West Marshall, the host school, at 346, followed by PCM (Monroe) 356, Roland-Story (Story City) 388, Saydel (Des Moines) 428, and Perry 432.

Coach Telleen told Raccoon Valley Radio, “We had a great round today. Both Joe and Jack were incredible today. I am so proud of the way our guys battled today. Obviously, we wish we could have come out on top, but this group has accomplished so much. This is their second conference runner-up score in a row.”

The girls play their conference tournament at Lincoln Valley course today.
