The 2022 Iowa Legislative Session was tentatively scheduled to be adjourned in early April and one lawmaker discusses the budget process, which is one reason the session is still going. 

Iowa State Senator for District 10 Jake Chapman says there are some differences between what the Iowa House of Representatives and the Iowa Senate is thinking when it comes to budgetary talks but Chapman says they aren’t too far apart. 

“I think we are very close on what the target is, how much we are willing to spend, I don’t think we are super far off there but you have different committee chairs of each budget that may have a little bit different priority within those budget bills. Those chairmen continue to work between the Senate and House to find compromise to be able to adjourn but I don’t think we are that far off.”

Chapman tells Raccoon Valley Radio he feels lawmakers are being disciplined with spending habits and want to ensure the continued fiscal responsibility.

“We recognize that it is not our money, it is the taxpayers money and we are going to be prudent with taxpayer money and when and where we can give that money back to the taxpayer that is exactly what we are going to do.”

The 2022 Iowa Legislative Session was originally scheduled to adjourn on April 19th, which was the 100th day of the session and marks when pay stops for Iowa lawmakers.
