Jefferson bird expert Matt Wetrich

A reminder about a free opportunity to learn about different species of birds is happening today and tomorrow in Greene County.

Local bird expert Matt Wetrich encourages anyone who is interested in birds to meet at the bridge at 270th Street and A Avenue to bird watch at Dunbar Slough. He will lead participants to different viewing locations at the public wildlife area that is in Greene County. Wetrich talks about the types of unique birds that are migrating right now and in the coming weeks.

“So now through mid-May is a fantastic time to be out there (at Dunbar Slough) because you get the early stuff like the different geese and the ducks, which are still coming through right now in good numbers. And now we’re going to start seeing the shore birds, the sandpipers and the plovers, and the different wading birds like egrets, and ibises, and herrings, all that stuff showing up now and we’ll just keep going here. Just the floodgates are opening right now (and) the diversity is literally day by day changing and sometimes hour by hour, depending on what the weather is that day.”

Today and tomorrow the free event will begin at 8am and last most of the morning. Participants are encouraged to bring their binoculars and camera as well.
