There are tiny libraries located around Dallas County that can help people get their gardens started or get the specific seeds they are looking for.
Dallas County Extension and Outreach has multiple seed libraries throughout Dallas County and Dallas County Master Gardener Coordinator Megan Will says the idea behind the library is to allow people to get whatever seeds they need for free. Will says most seed packets come with more seeds than the average person needs so the extras are placed in the seed libraries.
“We’ve taken that bigger packet of seeds and broken it up into four or five smaller packets, put a label of what they are with a small description. Then there’s a web address where you can go to our master list of seeds and it gives you more detail on planting instructions and you don’t have to bring those seeds back.”
Will tells Raccoon Valley Radio there are locations at the Dallas County Extension Building, Perry, Minburn and Adel libraries, Waukee Family YMCA and Westview Church in Waukee. Will says it’s useful for people who may be just starting gardening.
“If you have a smaller plot or container you might not need all those big packets of seeds that you would get at the stores. We are just trying to make them a little bit smaller, get more people, maybe sampling gardening before they go dive in head first.”
