Both the girls and boys soccer programs at Greene County High School were in action on Monday. The girls hosted Panorama (Panora) in Grand Junction while the boys were in Huxley and faced Ballard.

Coach Maribel Hernandez watched her girls’ team compete against a good Panthers’ team that entered the night with a 1-0 record, which was a 1-0 victory over Class 2A Harlan Community. The Rams entered at 0-2 and had shown great defensive improvement, but had no goals in the first two matches of the season. The Panthers won 10-0 to improve to 2-0 while the Rams fell to 0-3. Mia Waddle had five goals for Panorama. The Rams had two shots on goal late in the first half, first by Hallie Monthei, then on a penalty kick with 26 seconds to go before intermission by Esther Van Horn, who was tackled by the goalkeeper after missing a shot on goal. Van Horn’s attempt at the first goal of the season was toward the top of the net and was knocked over the pipe by the keeper. Panorama led 9-0 at intermission, then the Panthers ended the contest early in the second half to reach the 10-goal margin rule.

Coach Carl Behne’s boys’ squad played for just the second time this season. Sitting for 1-1/2 weeks after winning 2-1 in overtime in Boone on March 31 to open the season, the Rams faced a Ballard team that was 0-3 to start this Spring and had been outscored 30-1. The Bombers were up 1-0 before the Rams led 2-1 at halftime and went on to win 6-1. Coach Behne told Raccoon Valley Radio the Rams started a little slow and the team was too compact. Brenner Gallagher tied the score at 1-1 and Jose Velazco’s goal put the Rams up 2-1. The coach added the Rams came into the second half motivated to win. Early in half number two Gesser Aguillar scored, followed by goals from Nathan Behne, Aguillar again, and a second Velazco goal. Cody Allen, Behne, Aguillar, and Velazco had assists. Greene County had 31 shots and 21 shots on goal while Coach Behne also praised Gabe Ebersole for his play in goal with six saves and only one goal allowed in 80 minutes.
