The Iowa Department of Education recently sent out funds to 136 schools to prepare K-12 teachers to teach computer science and a Guthrie County school district will gain a new elective.
West Central Valley Superintendent Rusty Shockley says this piece of legislation would make it so every school district has to offer a computer science class by the 2023 school year. Shockley explains they have the computer capabilities and are in the process of getting the curriculum together.
“I think any time that you offer new programming, it’s going to be beneficial. I think it’ll be interesting to see the interest level and how many kids are interested in taking an elective course like that.”
Shockley says the computer science class will start in the high school and eventually include middle and elementary grades as well. The school district will receive an annual amount of $69,000.
