As the National Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Tournament continues, Guthrie Center has a tie to a team making a run to the Sweet 16.
Creighton Women’s Head Basketball Coach Jim Flanery is a native of Guthrie Center and has coached the Bluejays to two victories in the NCAA tournament. Flanery says growing up in Guthrie Center has led him to develop a lot of good coaching values.
“You know, I think when you’re in a small town, you can’t help but develop good relationships.”
Flanery says the outgoing support from Guthrie Center residents has been overwhelming as Creighton moves into the third round.
“It’s neat because it lets me know that it is meaningful and that it’s a long time coming to get to this point. But yeah, it’s really cool to think that that many people watch that game.”
The Creighton Lady Bluejays will have a chance to advance to the Elite Eight when they play against Iowa State in Greensboro, North Carolina on Friday at 8:30pm.
