While Severe Weather Awareness Week continues, today is the day to look at the dangers of tornadoes.

Dallas County Emergency Management Coordinator A.J. Seely says when it comes to tornados officials will be talking about what tornadoes are and what you should do in the event of one.

“Tornadoes are typically a violent, rotating column and we see them on the ground from the cloud level below but typically that rotation extends up far into the clouds. Tornadoes can come in all different shapes and sizes, varying widths, they can come with varying speeds”

Seely tells Raccoon Valley Radio there have been tornadoes in Dallas County in the past years with speeds of 70 mph but even more recently there have been other tornadoes in the area with higher wind speeds including the recent tornado that hit Winterset.

“Main thing with tornadoes is we do want people to take appropriate action . They can be violent, they can throw debris, they can pick up debris. So, even though it might be cool to take pictures of them and be outside watching, we definitely want people to exercise that safe place and take action when appropriate.”
