Carter Morton of Jefferson had a successful indoor track & field season for the University of Northern Iowa men’s team, and now it’s on to the outdoor campaign. The 2020 Greene County High School graduate was home recently on Spring Break and he spoke with Raccoon Valley Radio.

Morton, the son of Chad and Deb Morton, grew up in an athlete family, with both parents being athletes and Chad being the head coach of the boys’ track & field program at Greene County. Carter and his fellow 2020 seniors did not have their final high school season due to COVID-19 cancelling school and all activities, but his junior campaign and potential took him to Cedar Falls, where he’s done well as a multi-sport athlete. That means he competes in as many as 10 different events, seven in the heptathlon indoors and 10 n the decathlon outdoors.

On his recently completed indoors campaign, he told Raccoon Valley Radio, “I finished second in the Missouri Valley Conference in the heptathlon, which was good, but I went into the meet with the highest score in the conference, so I wanted to win it. I’m looking forward to the outdoor season and I think we’ll have a good team this year.”

Morton earned All-Conference honors for the his runner-up finish in the heptathlon and he also placed sixth in the open high jump, which he did just 1o minutes after running the 1,000 meters, the last of the seven heptathlon events.
