Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union rules state a varsity track and field program can compete in 12 regular season meets. Greene County girls’ head coach Kelly Simpson annually schedules less than that and he tells Raccoon Valley Radio why. “What we learned in the last decade is due to weather, that if you’re racing less and training more, you get better results in late May. That’s going back to the college philosophy, and I’ve done that for years. We’re not running the full schedule of 12 regular season meets, and now some of the other teams are starting to figure that out a little bit. Running once a week is probably good enough.”
The Rams have 10 regular season meets on the outdoor schedule including home meets in Jefferson on March 31 and April 21. The Rams do have two meets scheduled for some weeks and one meet in others, but weather is always a determining factor on if a meet gets held.
The State Qualifying Meet is set for Thursday, May 15 and the State Meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines will be held May 22-24.
