Katrina Heupel in 2022

There are nearly 40 girls on the Greene County High School track & field squad and nearly all of them are clearly defined by the events they compete in. There are jumpers, throwers, hurdlers, sprinters, middle distance, and distance runners.
Junior Katrina Heupel is a returning letter winner who is versatile enough she runs anywhere from 100 up to and including 1,500 meters. How does she train for races that are so different? “I did it last year, so I just do a sprinting practice one day and distance the next.” She talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about what she enjoys about track & field. “I really enjoy pushing myself. Feeling pain on my legs means I’m getting better!”

As far as Heupel’s thoughts on the 2022 Rams, she said, “I think we’re looking really good so far this year. We have a lot more people for distance running, so I think that’ll do much better this year.”

Greene County sends its girls and boys to Buena Vista University in Storm Lake on Saturday for their third and final indoor meet of the season. The outdoor campaign for both teams is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 28 in Jefferson at the Greene County Early Bird meet at Linduska Field.
