It was a monumental day in Dallas Center – Grimes boys basketball program history on Tuesday afternoon, as the Mustang program was able to win their first ever state tournament game 65-45 over the Carroll Tigers. For the top overall seed Mustangs, they move to 20-5 on the year and for Carroll, conclude their year at 16-9 as their 8 game winning streak was halted.
After just a one point first quarter lead in a back and forth affair, DCG was able to outscore Carroll 17-6 in the second frame to take a 30-18 halftime lead. In the second half, the Mustangs were able to run great offense that lead to a 11-15 mark in field goals and 23 free throw attempts as well, pulling away down the stretch.
The Mustangs were able to win the game on the defensive end, as they were able to hold Carroll 17 points below their season scoring average and to 36% shooting from the field.
Senior Jacob Runyan was able to put together a terrific day, as he was able to tally a double double with 10 points and 10 assists. Senior Jackson Jones was able to grab 18 points with four made threes, and Bo Huston was able to put up 13 points including three triples. Mustang basketball was able to shoot 57% from the field.
DCG will be playing in the 3A semifinals tomorrow against the Winterset Huskies, as the Mustangs will be looking to continue this run and find a way into their first state championship game in program history.
