Iowans in 25 counties who were impacted by the December 15, 2021 tornadoes can now apply for federal assistance.

President Joe Biden approved a request by the Governor’s Office, as well as each Iowa congressional member for a disaster declaration. The approval means that federal assistance can now be used to supplement state, tribal and local recovery efforts in 25 Iowa counties that were affected by severe storms, straight-line winds and tornadoes on December 15th.

Federal funding is available to state, tribal and eligible local governments and certain private and non-profit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities that were damaged. Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide. Greene and Guthrie counties are among the 25 counties that are available.

Governor Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation on December 16th for 43 counties to receive state assistance from the impacts of the storms on December 15th. U.S. Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst, along with U.S. Representatives Cindy Axne, Randy Feensrta, Ashley Hinson, and Mariannette Miller-Meeks sent a letter to the President earlier this month urging him to approve federal assistance and resources as well.
