Greene County junior Kale Petersen won his second State Wrestling title while denying Camron Phetxoumphone his third on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Petersen on the 120 lbs. title in 2A this season after taking first in 1A in 2021 for West Fork of Sheffield. He became the fifth Ram in program history to finish atop the podium in wrestling. McKinley Robbins became the first in program history to wrestle in three State Championship matches. He is 1-2 in title bouts after dropping a 5-3 decision to Blaine Frazier of 2A team champion West Burlington Notre Dame at 132 lbs. Robbins beat Frazier in 2021 for the 120 lbs. title by a 7-5 final and he lost 5-0 to Phetxoumphone in 2020 at 106 lbs.
Petersen said the match was one of the toughest he’s had in his three years of high school. He won 8-5 on the strength of four takedowns, completing a 13-0 season and handing the Lynx senior his only loss of the season.
