As Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer recently retired, President Joe Biden has been on the search for a replacement and a local US representative weighs in.
U.S. Representative from Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District Cindy Axne explains she is looking for someone with strong experience, character and integrity to be on the Supreme Court.
“Definitely dedication to the Constitution and the rule of law. So that’s what I will always be looking for to serve on the highest court.”
President Biden has pledged to nominate the first black women on the highest court. Axne says other presidents have looked at physical traits as qualifications before.
“And I’d like to go back to President Reagan when he pledged when he was running to put the first woman on the Supreme Court, which I thank him for doing that. And President Biden is really following in those same footsteps, saying, you know, it’s time that we have a black woman there. We need to represent our country.”
Axne says she trusts the President’s judgment to choose the most qualified candidate to meet the needs of Americans.
