The Greene County Historical Society is hosting a free program this weekend that focuses on this month as Black History Month.

Rural Rippey resident, retired minister and historical society member Dale Hanaman will lead a discussion on the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments to the U.S. Constitution, which are known as the Civil Rights Amendments. The 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the U.S. in 1865, the 14th Amendment was passed in 1868 that grants citizenship to all born or naturalized individuals in the U.S. and the in 1870, the 15th Amendment prohibits states from disenfranchising voters “on account of race, color or previous condition of servitude.”

Hanaman will also use excerpts from the book, “The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution” written by Eric Foner, who is a Columbia University professor who is an authority on American history.

The program will be held at 2pm on Sunday at the Greene County Historical Museum. It is free and open to the public.
