It was Greene County and Southeast Valley Part II on Monday night in Carroll at Kuemper Catholic High School. The Jaguars handled the Rams 62-32 in Gowrie on Feb. 7 and last night they met to open the Class 2A District 5 tournament. SEV, now 12-10, was a 65-57 winner and they advance to play Heart of Iowa Activities Conference champion Roland-Story in Story City Thursday night while Greene County ends its season at 9-13 with five losses in a row.
U. of Iowa football recruit Aaron Graves had 30 points for the Jaguars and Kolson Kruse added 21. Graves is also one of Class 2A’s top heavyweight wrestlers and will compete Thursday morning in the opening round of the State Tournament in Des Moines.
Junior Richard Daugherty made five three-pointers and finished with 21 points to lead the Rams, who made 12-3’s in the loss. Junior Jesse Miller and senior Bryce Stalder each added 12 points.
SEV was 24 of 48 from the floor and three of 11 on three-pointers, all made in the first quarter. They went 14 of 28 shooting free throws including 12 of 18 in the final quarter. Greene County went 12 of 32 on three’s and 20 of 53 overall. The Rams made five of six from the free throw line.
Senior Max Riley missed the game due to illness. Four other seniors played their final basketball game for the Rams. They were Stalder, Jackson Morton, Caden Telleen, and Blake Hammen.
