A resolution recently made it out of an Iowa Senate committee that would call for a Convention of the States.
District 24 Senator Jesse Green of Boone says the Convention of the States is reserved under Article 5 of the U.S. Constitution, where at least 34 states can call for a convention to propose an amendment to the Constitution. Green wants there to be an amendment to control federal spending.
“After what we’ve all seen, both Democrats and Republicans in Washington (D.C.) that we have sent have now bloated our government up to, our debt is 127-percent of our national GDP (Gross Domestic Product). This hasn’t been the case since World War II. I think this is a tipping point and I’m so excited to be a part of this effort.”
Green says the amendment then has to be ratified by 38 states before it can be added to the Constitution.
U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley shares his opinion should a Convention of the States happen.
“If 34 states did it, I guess I would be compelled to call such a convention. I would want it to be limited to the purpose of what the states called for to do. But I don’t have any problems with a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget, if that’s what that resolution is about. Because I have voted four times in the years that I’ve been in the Senate for such a constitutional amendment.”
Green believes the Iowa Senate will pass the resolution and so will the House. He adds if Iowa calls for the Convention of the States, there would be less than 20 states in the country to have done so as well.
