Greene Co Sheriff Jack Williams
A new rule is now in effect that aims to help improve firearm safety.
The U.S. Department of Justice now requires all federal firearm licensees that sell firearms to the general public to certify that they have secure gun storage and safety devices available for purchase. Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams agrees with the new rule and explains the importance of keeping firearms stored in a safe location.
“It’s very important. It’s nice to know that people at least know that you can’t really leave a gun just laying out that a small kid could get a hold of, and that there are measures out there that make it pretty simple to render the weapon safe.”
Williams adds the sheriff’s office also offers a free opportunity for firearm owners to keep their weapons safe when not in use.
“We do have a bunch of gun locks that we’ll give out for free. All you have to do is come out to 1005 East Lincoln Way (in Jefferson) and request them, and we’ll give you free gun locks.”
The new DOJ rule took effect on February 3rd.
