When the weather gets cold you can often hear the term wind chill and it’s important to understand what that means.
Dallas County Emergency Management Coordinator A.J. Seely says the wind chill is what the temperature feels like after you have factored in the wind. Seely says wind chill can lead to dangerous situations.
“Where it gets concerning is at some of those temperatures, negative 19 or so even a little bit less in some cases, it can cause frostbite in 30 minutes or less. So, you want to make sure that we are cognizant of what the wind chill is. Wind chill can affect how fast your body cools down as well so we want to make sure that we are taking that into account anytime we see any wind chills.”
Seely tells Raccoon Valley Radio an example of wind chill is if you have a temperature of zero degrees and you have a 15 mile per hour wind, the temperature will feel like -19 degrees outside.
