The West Marshall girls and Greene County boys were Heart of Iowa Activities Conference basketball winners in State Center on Friday night. The girls’ final was 47-11 and the boys’ was 75-61.
The Trojans are ranked tenth in Class 3A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. They improved to 10-1 in the conference and 17-2 overall while the Rams lost for the fifteenth time in a row and are 1-15, 0-11. Katy Reyerson scored 23 points and WM held the Rams without a point from late in the first quarter until about two minutes remained in the game. The Rams made just four shots all night, however three were three-pointers. Emma Shipley had six points and Brianna Habben added five. The Rams turned the ball over 27 times.
The Rams never trailed in the boys’ game and after taking a 14-4 lead, WM closed to within two points at 16-14 at the end of the first quarter. Greene County got the lead back to 10 in the second quarter and was up 39-30 at the half. A 14 point advantage shrunk to six in the fourth quarter at 65-59, but a quick 7-0 Greene County run put the game away down the stretch. All five Greene County starters scored in double figures and they were the only five Rams to get on the scoreboard. Bryce Stalder had 21 points with 18 by Jesse Miller, 14 for Richard Daugherty, and 11 apiece from Max Riley and Jackson Morton. The Rams shot 53% for the game and made five of 12 three-pointers. They were 14 of 20 from the foul line. WM had 17 points from senior Kinnick Christensen on Senior Night. The Rams are now 8-8 overall and 7-4 in the conference while the Trojans fell to 6-13 overall and 3-8 in the league after being swept in the two game season series.
