Vaccinations have taken center stage during the ongoing pandemic, but keeping children on their regular vaccination schedules is equally as important.

Dallas County Health Department Public Information Officer Ann Cochran says it’s important for vaccines to be given within the range given by clinics.

“It is important to stay within that window of time so that the vaccine can work correctly. It’s all based on repetition of finding out what works, what doesn’t work, which kids ended up getting sick, which ones stayed well and so the schedule is there for a reason.”

Cochran tells Raccoon Valley Radio there are also other vaccinations that people may not think of after children reach kindergarten age.

“Some folks are surprised to find out that kids aren’t done with immunizations after they start kindergarten. Everyone should receive a vaccine, for instance, against meningitis. Before 7th grade or about age 10 and another dose at age 16.”

Cochran mentions another important vaccination is the vaccine against HPV which prevents cancers in both males and females. Cochran explains it’s a safe and effective vaccination for anyone who receives the three doses prior to exposure.
