With snow coming this weekend, Jefferson residents are once again reminded of the City’s snow ordinance.
The snow ordinance is in effect when there is at least one-half-inch of accumulated snowfall. When that happens, vehicles cannot be parked on the street, alleyway, and city-owned off-street parking until the snow event has stopped and the streets have been cleared from curb to curb. However, Building Official Chad Stevens reminds property owners that they also have to keep their sidewalks cleared of ice and snow following every winter weather event.
“You do have 12 hours after the snow ends to get all of the snow and ice accumulations removed from your sidewalks, just (to) make sure we have safe place for pedestrians to get around town.”
Stevens notes he will survey the town periodically after a snow event and if a property owner hasn’t removed the snow and ice within 12 hours he will serve a one-time notice and then you will have 24-48 hours to clear the sidewalk. Stevens adds the next time the property owner doesn’t clear their sidewalk, city crews can do it for you and the property owner will be assessed a rate of $130 per hour, with a minimum of one hour.
